Is Bob Buster Lying to Voters, or Simply Incompetent?
“I’ve never seen such factual blunders by a career politician,” says Jeffries

(Riverside, CA) In a political hit piece sent to voters throughout the 1st Supervisorial District in Riverside County, an increasingly desperate 20 year incumbent Bob Buster made statements about his opponent that are so grossly inaccurate and objectively wrong that voters have no choice but to question the honesty and credibility of the five term incumbent.

“I’ve never seen a hit piece as factually inaccurate as the one Bob Buster mailed out this past weekend,” said Jeffries. “It seems pretty clear that Buster’s campaign is in full blown panic mode. There are always questionable arguments and political spin in campaigns, but Bob has undeniably reached a new low. Buster claims in his mailer that I voted to support 34 ‘job killer’ bills and that I opposed foreclosure reform. The facts are that out of 199 ‘job killer’ bills – I only voted to support two* of them (not 34) – and one of the amended bills I did support - was major foreclosure relief for homeowners – the very same issue Buster attacked me on in the same mailer for not supporting! I don’t know if Buster is intentionally lying to voters, or is simply too incompetent to understand the legislative process in California, but I’m certain the California Chamber of Commerce would be happy to verify for Mr. Buster that I voted on the right side of job protection 197 out of 199 times and have been one of the most reliable fighters for job creation in the entire legislature,” said Jeffries.

“If Bob Buster had any integrity, he would send a retraction and apology to every voter household he sent the false mailer to.  The other issues in his mailer were simply typical political distortions that come from struggling campaigns.  He attempted to attack me over past support from public safety organizations, yet he forgot to mention that he has received far more money during his political career from unions than I have.  Buster also ranted over my refusal to get in bed with former Governor Schwarzenegger and vote for his secretly drafted half-cooked pension reform, forgetting of course to mention that I had just supported the most comprehensive statewide pension reform to pass in California history, or that he (Buster) supported lavish union benefits for county employees before he flipped years later to oppose them (though he has never voted to cut his own six figure pension).”

“For over five years I led a reform effort to require that every state lawmaker be allowed time to actually read bills before they were required to vote on them. In many cases if I did not have time to read a bill or I knew before the vote that it was going to be significantly amended after I voted on it - I either voted no or refused to vote. Buster, however, used his mailer to twist my reform efforts to essentially say that I should have voted for every bill regardless if I knew what was in it or if it was going to be changed.  Buster also used his mud-slinging mailer to attack me for not voting on a bill to fund millions for public relations on the questionable high speed rail project. Buster of course forgot to mention that the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), which Buster is a member and past chair of, asked me to support the bill.”

“I await the incumbent’s apology and correction to the voters of the 1st District, but it seems obvious that ethics and full disclosure are not one of Bob’s stronger points, as he becomes increasingly desperate in his attempts to hold on to his job for a sixth term.”

*Amended on 10/14/12 to clarify two bills, rather than the one previously stated
