Inland Empire Taxpayers Association Endorses Kevin Jeffries for Riverside County Supervisor

1st District Race Features a Tax Fighter, a Tax Raiser, and a Union Proxy

(Riverside, CA) The Inland Empire Taxpayers Association (IETA) today announced their endorsement of Kevin Jeffries for Riverside County Supervisor in the 1st District. “We don’t get involved in every local election, but as we watched this race we grew increasingly concerned with the influence of the government employee unions on one candidate in this race. Of the other two candidates, only Kevin Jeffries has a long history of fighting against higher taxes and fee increases,” said IETA Founder and Past President Chris Mann.

The IETA had previously expressed concerns in this race (click here to view that press-release) after SEIU, representing government employees in Riverside County, endorsed Mike Soubirous, claiming in leaked e-mails that it was an opportunity to “elect our own boss” and eliminate future problems at the negotiating table. Subsequently, these unions have given Mike Soubirous over $250,000 (nearly 100% of his fundraising total), and newly leaked e-mails now show that these same unions are actually paying people to walk precincts and make phone calls on behalf of Soubirous.

“It is clear that the government employee unions are ‘all in’ on this race, and are trying to elect their own boss to the Board of Supervisors. This is bad news for taxpayers in Riverside County,” said Mann. “How can Soubirous possibly be expected to stand up to these unions in budget talks when they would be entirely responsible for his election?”

While both of the other candidates have a history of fighting for pension reform, only one of them has consistently opposed higher taxes and fees on Riverside County residents. “Kevin Jeffries has always voted against higher taxes and fees. Supervisor Bob Buster, on the other hand, voted to support $58 billion in new taxes last year alone. This is why we are joining the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, the National Tax Limitation Committee, and the California Small Business Association in endorsing Kevin Jeffries in this critical race,” announced Mann.

“Furthermore, Jeffries is the only candidate in this race not receiving (or planning to receive) a six figure, taxpayer subsidized pension for the rest of his life. His small business owner experience and attitude make him a superior choice in this race to represent the taxpayers of Riverside County.”

The Inland Empire Taxpayers Association is willing to provide the media with copies of the leaked e-mails revealing the “pay for play” union offer to supporters of Soubirous, the previous leaked e-mails detailing their plan to elect “our own boss” in Soubirous, and Supervisor Buster’s vote to support $58 billion in tax increases, by request.

The Inland Empire Taxpayers Association (IETA) is an organization founded with the primary goal of putting an end to attempts by various local government agencies to raise our taxes…including passing new bonds and raising fees. Since its creation in April, 2006, the IETA has been successful at defeating ballot measures totaling over $813 million. In all, through its efforts fighting taxes at the ballot box, the IETA has directly prevented the creation of over $1.6 billion of new public debt (initial bond amounts plus interest).

The Inland Empire Taxpayers Association is dedicated to researching ballot measures, candidates and public policy issues, educating the public on these matters and taking action to protect the interests of taxpayers in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.
